Our recent trip to Dubuque, Iowa, for the Luck of the Draw art show was a journey brimming with creativity, exploration, and a touch of serendipity. Ken and I set out on our one free day in Dubuque with the intention of capturing magical moments at the Julian Dubuque Monument, envisioning it as the perfect backdrop for a fairytale-inspired photoshoot. What unfolded was a vivid reminder of the beauty of embracing the unexpected and deepening our connection.

In preparation for shooting during the trip (but with absolutely no destination or theme in mind), I had packed a diverse array of medieval and fantasy-inspired items—elf ears, flower crowns, shimmering dresses, corsets, and belts. The idea was to leave the final selection up to Ken, putting my trust in him to create something magical, so I grabbed a bag full of props and accessories, hoping he would be inspired by the choices. His excitement was palpable when he saw the elf ears, flower crown, and shimmering green dress. He immediately envisioned a fantastical theme, imagining me as an elf queen.

The drive to Dubuque was more than just a means to our destination; it was a precious time to bond with Ken. It was our first extended trip together, and the days spent on the road deepened my appreciation and love for him. We filled the journey with music, business planning, and meaningful conversations about life. One of the most magical moments occurred as we neared Dubuque: thousands of fireflies illuminated the path on either side of the road. It felt like a shared dream, a symbol of the light and warmth Ken brings into my life. His presence made every mile of the journey feel special and filled with possibility.

Upon arriving at the Mines of Spain, our initial goal was the Julian Dubuque Monument. However, as we approached, we stumbled upon a wildflower meadow. We decided to take a detour to capture some macro shots of the delicate blooms. This unplanned stop provided a serene start to our photographic adventure and allowed us to connect with the natural beauty around us. It was a reminder of how our shared experiences and the moments we create together are what truly matter.

As we continued on our route to the monument, we passed through various trails and scenic forested areas. Once we parked, we chose my wardrobe, carefully changed in a parking lot, and headed down the path in front of us. About five minutes into our journey, we began to suspect that we might be lost. Instead of feeling disheartened, we embraced the detour. The forested wonderland we had discovered was too enchanting to ignore. The lush, verdant landscape became our unexpected stage, and the impromptu setting proved to be a goldmine for creativity.

The forest offered a stunning array of locations. I delighted in embodying the role of the elf queen, wandering through sun-dappled paths, climbing moss-covered stone steps, and posing amidst fallen trees. Ken’s perspective and vision transformed these natural elements into a fairytale scene, capturing enchanting photos that exceeded our initial expectations. His ability to see beauty in the world and translate it into art continually amazes me, and this shoot was a perfect example of how our creative energies align and enhance each other.

Eventually, we did make our way to the Julian Dubuque Monument. The views from the top were even more magnificent than we had imagined, providing a spectacular backdrop for our fantasy photos. The grandeur of the monument contrasted beautifully with the whimsical forest scenes we had captured earlier. This juxtaposition created a diverse and captivating collection of images, showcasing the richness of our creative exploration.

Reflecting on the day, the photoshoot at the Mines of Spain was more than just a creative project; it was a profound lesson in embracing the journey and finding beauty in the unexpected. The experience reinforced my love for spontaneity and the joy of letting go of rigid plans. Our connection and the love we share were palpable throughout the day, making every moment feel even more meaningful.

This adventure also resonated deeply with the values and mission of PolyKindred. Our day at the Mines of Spain was a beautiful example of connection—not only between Ken and me but also with nature and the story we were creating through our art. PolyKindred is built on the principles of connection and collaboration, and this experience exemplified those values perfectly. By allowing ourselves to embrace the unexpected, we created something truly magical together.

Our trip to Dubuque was part of a larger journey that included participating in the Luck of the Draw art show. The show was a vibrant celebration of artistic expression, and Ken and I were thrilled to contribute with our own work. Immersing ourselves in the local art scene and meeting fellow creatives was inspiring and added a layer of richness to our trip.

As we continue our creative journey, Ken and I are reminded to stay curious and open to the surprises that come our way. The photoshoot at the Mines of Spain taught us that sometimes the most remarkable moments arise from the paths we never planned to take. Embracing the unexpected allows us to discover new perspectives, connect more deeply, and create art that is truly meaningful.

So, stay curious, embrace the unexpected, and remember that every path has the potential to lead to something beautiful if you approach it with the right mindset.
